Harmonic Chant, Movement, and Meditation: The Joyful JourneyWith David Hykes & Dennis Lewis
Workshop Description
From the Big Bang to "healing sounds", the harmonic nature of reality continues to resound in body, mind and spirit. Explore a revolutionary and timeless "harmonic source"-–the contemplative vocal music called Harmonic Chant, with legendary founder David Hykes and pioneering breath and qigong teacher Dennis Lewis. Participants will undertake a contemplative and joyful journey of awareness to the evolutionary "wavefront" where the inner and outer energies of listening, harmonic sound, breath, and sensation meet--in the unknown. Pure mystery! Each day's music begins with a guided harmonic meditation, and includes Harmonic Chant, a universal music based on the natural overtones of the voice; special movement and qigong exercises; Authentic Breathing, which explores multi-dimensional levels of breath and sensation; movements and postures to open up bio-acoustic body awareness; and discussions of our experiences. Our aim is to discover the quiet, silent and joyful state of inner listening to all that is. Recommended Listening and Reading: Hearing Solar Winds, CD by David Hykes/Harmonic Choir, and The Tao of Natural Breathing, by Dennis Lewis. Workshop/Retreat DatesEsalen: Sunday September 15 through Friday September 20, 2002.
Workshop LocationEsalen Institute, Big Sur, California The Esalen Institute was founded in 1962 as an alternative educational center devoted to the exploration of what Aldous Huxley called the "human potential," the world of unrealized human capacities that lies beyond the imagination. Esalen soon became known for its blend of East/West philosophies, its experiential/didactic workshops, the steady influx of philosophers, psychologists, artists, and religious thinkers, and its breathtaking grounds blessed with natural hot springs. Once home to a Native American tribe known as the Esalen, Esalen is situated on 27 acres of spectacular Big Sur coastline with the Santa Lucia Mountains rising sharply behind. For information or reservations, use the link above or call 1-831-667-3005. Please note: Retreat information will not be available through Esalen until April, 2002.
A Harmonic Opening into the Miracle of the Unknown This retreat focuses on a harmonic opening into the miracle of the unknown. The aim is to hear ever more sides of ourselves, feeling them touched by silence and presence, and to open to a larger scale of harmony than is usually possible in everyday life. To help make this possible, this retreat offers work with chanting, with breath, with listening, with sensation. It provides deep meditative and grounding work, so that our glimpses from within upwards toward the heavens can become channels of awareness through which the sacred can descend and take root. In this vision, we are intermediates, living in a middle world, open potentially to great heights and great depths, a meeting ground where the energies of matter arise and to which the energies of spirit descend. Through listening, through attunement to reality both within and without, we can learn how we block this potential meeting and how we can help it take place. With matter and spirit as the ultimate poles of our harmonic universe--including all its various levels, densities and octaves--we shall try to understand our possible roles in this middle world as a place of harmonic meeting. David Hykes pioneered exploration of harmonics and consciousness in the West in the early 1970s. Since then, many approaches to healing and therapeutic sound have appeared. David has continued to develop the essential harmonic source teachings as well as new levels of meditative, healing and musical practices. His work consists of: Harmonic Chant; harmonic meditation linking breath, sensing and listening; and harmonic healing sounds. The energies of listening, breath, and sensation first become purified and energized, and can then join in a work of divine service, manifesting new, evolutionary forms of inner being. David's Harmonic Meetings, whether in concert experiments or in workshop groups, have allowed groups of people--from dozens to tens of thousands--to open to the harmonic world, a musically and emotionally stunning experience. The same magic takes place in these workshops. Each of you will learn about the harmonics of your own voice and how to produce them. But that is just the beginning. The surprisingly rich musical dimensions are linked to stages of the growth of consciousness, involving breath, sensation and listening. These themes are also central to the work of breathwork explorer Dennis Lewis. Through the meditative work of self-awareness in the context of both traditional and innovative postures and movements, you will learn how to dissolve the unnecessary tensions that restrict the free movement of your energies, thus enabling your body to become a better-tuned instrument of action and perception. You will also learn how to open up your inner breathing spaces and sense the physical and energetic movements of breath throughout your being. Together with Harmonic Chant, this work will help you strengthen and broaden your inner attention and discover a path of spacious awareness that embraces both "Heaven and Earth" with a new, more real sense of wholeness and meaning.
