The following meditation and chi kung practices have been passed down by Taoist master Mantak Chia and are taught by Dennis Lewis, who is a certified Healing Tao instructor. These simple practices provide a powerful introduction to the teachings of Taoism, with regard to both health and spiritual growth. Though we offer no public Healing Tao classes in San Francisco right now, we would happy to teach these classes through weekend workshops and short retreats in other locations. Inner Smile, Six Healing Sounds, and Microcosmic Orbit Meditations

Through the Inner Smile and Six Healing Sounds meditations you will learn how to get in touch with your organs and glands, cool and detoxify them, and reduce stress and tension. You will also learn how to transform your negative emotions and energies into your own creative life-force (Chi). Through the Microcosmic Orbit meditation, you will learn how to open, cleanse, and purify the main energy centers and pathways of your body. You will also learn how to connect with and absorb the universal, cosmic, and earth forces, combine them with your own life-force, and circulate the resulting energy throughout your organism not only for increased vitality and awareness, but also for greater emotional well-being and spiritual growth.

Iron Shirt Chi Kung 1

Through the standing postures, muscle locks, and breathing techniques of Iron Shirt Chi Kung 1, a kind of internal aerobics, you will learn how to sense your own internal structure and to be better rooted to the earth. Over time, as your internal power grows, your bones, tendons, fasciae, and vital organs will be strengthened, your energy will begin to flow more freely, and you will have the sensation of being increasingly grounded and centered in the midst of the activities of your everyday life.

Tai Chi Chi Kung 1

In this short, powerful form of Tai Chi, called Tai Chi Chi Kung 1, you will become increasingly aware of the relationship between your internal structure and your outer movements. You will learn more-efficient, better-integrated ways of moving in relation to gravity and the earth, relying more on chi power and less on muscle power. As you begin to move more authentically in relation to the force of gravity, propelled by the earth itself, you will become more finely attuned to your inner and outer worlds and begin to experience the meaning of "meditation in action."

Liangong in 18 Movements

Liangong in 18 Exercises was developed in China by qigong masters in conjunction with specialists in both Chinese and Western medicine. Liangong is based on qigong practices such as Tao-in, Eight Pieces of Brocade, Five Animal Exercises, and Muscle and Tendon Changing. It works systematically in 36 exercises (it was originally 18 exercises) with the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and organs of the body to promote fitness and health. Liangong can help reduce stress, strengthen your immune system, promote cardiovascular and respiratory health, increase flexibility, reduce muscular pain, speed healing of soft tissue, increase mental clarity, and promote somatic awareness. These exercises can also help open up the various breathing spaces of the body.
